Exhibition Opening: „gehend (Field Recordings 1–3)“ @KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin

Mittwoch, November 16th, 2011

Helen Mirra

gehend (Field Recordings 1–3)

Opening:

Saturday, November 26, 2011, 5 – 10 pm

November 27, 2011 – January 29, 2012

In the realm of artistic positions that deal with principles of nature and classification, Helen Mirra’s works hold a particular position. Rather than idealizing nature, they hover between processes of scientific experimentation on the one hand and calligraphic meditation on the other—a combination that produces a great sense of both melancholy and measure. Helen Mirra made her new groups of work—prints and rubbings—during hikes in and around Bonn, Berlin and Zurich. Due to their poetic minimalism these works open up a range of associations that animate the “small things” in nature and mobilize our ethical conscience towards the environment and its diversity.

Curated by Gabriele Horn

With the generous support by Kunststiftung NRW.

Opening Hours: Tue – Sun 12 – 7 pm, Thur 12 – 9 pm

The exhibition will be closed on December 24 and 31, 2011.

Admission: 6 Euro, concessions 4 Euro

Supplementary events

November 26 + 27, 2011:

Helen Mirra / Ernst Karel: Swiss Mountain Transport Systems: multi-channel version

In the summer and autumn of 2008 the musician Ernst Karel visited Mirra while she was in residence in Switzerland, and accompanied her on walks in the mountains. Karel made a series of stereo audio recordings of the transport systems they took to arrive at trailheads. Karel’s solo audio CD titled Swiss Mountain Transport System was released on the label Grünrekorder. In 2009 Mirra and Karel performed at Taka Ishii Gallery in Kyoto, Japan, with Karel’s recordings and Mirra on percussion. This inspired a collaborative 68 minute eight channel version of the project.

During the opening weekend of the exhibition, this work will be playing on the top floor of KW.

November 27, 2011, 5 pm:

Helen Mirra / Ernst Karel: Location Recordings

Presentation of Mirra’s silent 16mm films and Karel’s stereo audio works, followed by a public discussion

Location Recordings is a cooperation of KW Institute for Contemporary Art and Certain Sundays that takes place in collaboration with the Berliner Künstlerprogramm/DAAD.

The cultural programs of KW Institute for Contemporary Art are made possible thanks to the support of the Governing Mayor of Berlin—Senate Chancellery—Cultural Affairs.

Opening „After the Death of Painting“: 15.10.2011 – 7pm @ DadaPost Gallery, Berlin

After the Death of Painting
and
DAMTP Berlin
DAMTP: (Data Miners & Travailleurs Psychique)

After the Death of Painting:
After the Death of Painting is an exhibition that revisits the controversy from the late 1970s that declared the Western tradition of painting to be dead.

We have brought together artworks that mimic painting, and or compete with painting both formally and conceptually, but are not painting. This would include Large Scale Photographs or Digital works, Multimedia-Assemblage on the wall, Wall-Sculpture, and so on. These are not “oil paint on stretched canvas” works.

For Western painting, the skilled production of representations had been its mission since antiquity, through the Renaissance, and up to the Industrial Revolution. With the camera a new serial mode of image creation was introduced, which changed the way that artists would see and make art forever. Today with these changes, under postmodernity, we observe photography, joined by other practices, as they continue to push painting off the wall.

Painting, of course, did not die. Because also emanating from the late 1970s were several revivals of the Western format for painting. These would include the Junge Wilde movement in Germany, a group of representational painters in the United States led by Mark Tansey, and the Transavantguardia movement in Italy, and well-known today are the Leipzig School of painters. However, the art forms that developed out of the attacks on painting are alive and thriving as well. After the Death of Painting will exhibit some of these practices.

DAMTP Berlin:
DAMTP: (Data Miners & Travailleurs Psychique)
DAMTP Berlin Wahdat will “trimensionalize” the anti-situation of the labyrinth of Alytus (Lithuania)!

The DAMTP gathering will demon-strate the economic, scientific, and cultural bankruptcy of official culture. The gathering calls on those who are discontented with hierarchizaton of culture, and the continuous identification with White cultural clichés. The aim is to license a cognitive miscegenation that looks towards situations where new meanings are radiated.

DAMTP Berlin is not an art or cultural event. It is a self-organized community that creates a place for the collective production of the meaningful. Join us on site for talks on October 15th at 19:00 Uhr. We will discuss, celebrate, and play.

There will be a short program examining the exploitation of artists that fosters the gentrification of Berlin’s neighborhoods, the capital artists transport “into” the city, and art tourism profits, all of which exposes Berlin’s growing reputation as a bastion of artist exploitation.

An “Open Forum” will take place during normal gallery hours. You are invited to take propaganda materials – or to conceive and leave your own.

A “triolectical” football game is planned for Sunday 16th October, at Tempelhof airport in South Berlin, the sacred site of Knights Templar, the Prussian and Nazi military parades, one of the first concentration camps in Germany, and the site of the American airlift during the ‚Cold‘ War.
Meeting at 13:00hr at the U8 Boddinstraße station.

The goal of DAMTP Berlin is to “trimensionalize” the discourse outside the paradigm of Western dualism: of Black and White, of them and us, of good and evil.

‚A drawback‘

28 September – 2 October 2011

Opening on Friday the 30th  of September 2011 from 7 to 10 pm.
Wed-Sun 2 to 7 PM and on appointment

A drawback is a touring exhibition displaying drawings from international artist’s that share a passion for this medium.

First shown during the Edinburgh Art’s Festival, this is now the second leg of the tour. Perennial Art see this exhibition as an opportunity to celebrate the diversity and richness of this ancient practice.

Over the last 10 years there has been a major drawing revival within the contemporary art world. Thanks to the Centre for Drawing at Wimbledon College of Art in London, which began the first Masters drawing course in Europe in 2000 and the emergence of galleries and institutions that focus entirely upon exhibiting and selling contemporary drawings, finally it is seen as an independent artistic discipline in its own right.

Many artists are now creating drawings or are returning to its values.  The artist’s chosen for this exhibition are from mid career to established practicing artists, working in various mediums, including watercolour and human hair.

Perennial Art is a group of contemporary artists that curate a diverse range of themed exhibitions within temporary spaces.

The aim is to introduce emerging and established international contemporaries to a new public.

Perennial Art is a conceptual art group that works in a similar nature to the definition of our chosen name. Exhibitions take on the form of plants, producing cuttings that we sow into foreign land as touring shows.

Perennial first grew in Edinburgh yielding exhibitions such as, Edinburgh House and A drawback. The off cut/stem of Edinburgh House blossomed into Haus Berlin. Now A drawback has firmly taken root in Berlin and grown a few extra buds.
