Dear readers,

Today is again a special date – 09/11/11 – Ten years after the fall of the World Trade Center and the terrorist attacks on the USA, the world has underwent very many apparent changes. Within the last decade many wars were fought, great many people – both military and civilian – got killed, liberties were sacrificed for security – not only within the US, but also in many, if not most, other countries around the globe, including European countries and Germany – a new generation of prisons – without the right to contact a lawyer and being confronted with torture – have publicly come into existence… and the list can go on and on and on …

On the other hand, the past decade has also shown that people everywhere do prevail, stand together to get through and stand up against injustice and immorality.

Today, 09-11-11, is not only a day of remembering the past, but also more importantly a day to reflect on what consequences have come out of this day and to critically ask ourselves where each single one of us is standing and what we have learned since 2001. Lets remember that we all live in the here and now and that we consciously see the past and learn from past mistakes to make our future a little brighter. It was, is and always will be a task for all artists to document their times, comment on society and make contributions to history through their work. Now that our world is experiencing a more and more violent nature that lead to much destruction and disaster, it is time for all of us to get closer to one another and set our differences a little more aside.

Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,

Heute ist wieder einmal ein besonderes Datum – 09/11/11 – Zehn Jahre nach dem Fall des World Trade Centers und den Terroranschlägen auf die USA hat sich die Welt offensichtlich sehr verändert. Innerhalb des letzten Jahrzehnts sind viele Kriege geführt worden, sehr viele Menschen – sowohl Militärs als auch Zivilisten – wurden getötet, Freiheiten wurden im Namen der Sicherheit geopfert – und das nicht nur innerhalb der USA, sondern auch in vielen, wenn nicht den meisten Ländern rund um den Globus, einschließlich der europäischen Länder und Deutschlands – eine neue Generation von Gefängnissen – ohne das Recht auf einen Anwalt und mit Folter konfrontiert – sind neu entstanden … und die Liste kann immer weiter fortgeführt werden…

 Auf der anderen Seite hat sich im letzten Jahrzehnt auch erneut gezeigt, dass die Menschen überall versuchen Gutes zu tun, zusammenstehen und sich gegen Unrecht und falsche Moral wehren.

Heute, der 11.09.11, ist nicht nur ein Tag der Erinnerung an die Vergangenheit, sondern vor allem auch ein Tag um darüber nachzudenken, welche Konsequenzen aus diesem Datum seit 2001 entstanden sind. Jeder einzelne von uns sollte sich kritisch fragen, wo wir stehen und was wir seit 2001 aus der Geschichte gelernt haben. Trotz den immer wiederkehrenden Fernsehbildern der Vergangenheit müssen wir uns daran erinnern, dass wir alle im Hier und Jetzt leben und dass wir Heute bewusst erleben und aus den Fehlern der Vergangenheit lernen, um unsere Zukunft ein wenig hoffnungsvoller werden zu lassen. Es war, ist und bleibt eine Aufgabe für alle Künstler, ihre Gegenwart zu dokumentieren, unsere Gesellschaft zu kommentieren und durch ihre Arbeit Beiträge zur Geschichte zu leisten. Jetzt, da unsere Welt eine immer gewalttätigere Natur erfährt, die zu viel Zerstörung und Katastrophen führt, ist es Zeit für uns alle, ein wenig näher zusammenzurücken und unsere Differenzen ein wenig mehr zur Seite zu legen.

Husmann Tschäni – poultry poetry

Direktorenhaus presents the unique works of Husmann Tschäni, world-wide renowed collaborative artists working with pictures, stories and installations together. From the 1st of September until the 31st of March, Direktorenhaus becomes the lair for their exquisite illustrations, paintings, costumes and fabric sculptures. Everything is set up for creating an environment dominated by a powerful sense of fascination and theatrical presence.

Pascale Mira Tschäni & Michael Husmann Tschäni are based in Switzerland and both studied at the College of Art in Lucerne. They received further education at the National Institute of Design, India and a residency in Berlin. Since 2003 they have developed a unique collaborative style encompassing the world of painting, comics, illustration and installation and, recently, also performances from Mumbai to Melbourne. In fact they work backwards, painting in layers on the reverse of acrylic glass, using different materials, such as enamel, oil colour, watercolour, crayon, glitter and spray.

The Optipism Project, which is based in Copenhagen, is built on the Optipism Manifesto written by Denis Rivin. OPTIPISM. Liebe Freunde, liebe Leser,

Heute auf den Tag genau jährt sich der Bau der Berliner Mauer zum fünfzigsten Mal. Auch wenn seit dem Fall der Mauer  schon viele Jahre vergangen sind und die ehemals so symbolische Mauer schon fast komplett aus den Stadtbild Berlins verschwunden ist, ermahnt dieser ganz besondere Tag doch zum Einhalt und Nachdenken.

Der ehemals in einer Pressekonferenz am 15. Juni 1961 von Walter Ulbricht verkündete Satz: „Niemand hat die Absicht eine Mauer zu errichten“ wurde seither oft zitiert – zeigt er doch die Ironie der Geschichte so eindrücklich. Zwei Monate danach wurden am Sonntag, 13.08.1961 ab 1 Uhr morgends mit der ‚Schliessung‘ der fast 170 Kilometer reichenden Grenzen zwischen West-Berlin und der ehemaligen DDR mit Stacheldraht begonnen.

Ich selbst habe mich im Rahmen meiner Arbeit immer wieder bemüht, durch meine Kunst dem Vergessen in Deutschland und im Ausland entgegen zu wirken und in diesem Kontext auch immer wieder an geeigneten Ausstellungen, wie zum Beispiel ‚Personally Political – Contemporary Sensation‘, Arthouse Tacheles, Berlin, oder auch ‚Rise and Fall, USA, teilgenommen.

Selbst aus Korea stammend, möchte ich den heutigen Tag dazu nutzen meine Leser abermals zu erinnern, dass auch Heute noch derartige Grenzen und Mauern in meinem Heimatland existieren. Wo in Deutschland ehemals Ost und West existierten, existiert Heute noch Nord und Süd in meiner Heimat.

Ich möchte mich bei allen meinen Lesern Heute erneut bedanken und werde auch weiterhin Ausstellungstipps in und um Berlin geben und mich auch in Zukunft gegen das Vergessen und für mehr „Grenzenlosigkeit“ einsetzen, denn – wie auch schon auf der Berliner Mauer in weiser Vorraussicht geschrieben stan: „Irgendwann fällt jede Mauer . . . “

Dear friends, dear readers,

Exactly on this day today, the building of the Berlin Wall completes its 50th Anniversary. Since its fall, many years have passed and even though the – once so symbolic – wall has been erased almost completely from the cityscape of Berlin, I want to remind people on this very special day to stop and reflect.

The well known sentence that has been proclaimed  at a press conference in 15th June 1961 by Walter Ulbrich: „Nobody has the intention to erect a wall“ has been quoted many times since – It shows the irony of history very vividly: Two months later, on Sunday, the 13^th of August 1961 the ‚closure‘ of the nearly 170 km-long border between West Berlin and the former DDR was started and the borders were ‘secured’ with barbed wire.

I myself am involved with my art in an effort to battle the forgetting this piece of history in Germany and also internationally and have contributed to many exhibitions within this context, such as ‚Political Personally – Contemporary Sensation‘, Arthouse Tacheles, Berlin, or ‚Rise and Fall’,in different cities across the USA.

Being from Korea, I want to remind my reader to remember once again that even today such boundaries and walls still exist in my home country. Where the East and West Germany existed formerly, North and South are still existing today in my home.

I want to again thank all my readers today and will continue to post current art-exhibitions in Berlin and around Germany. I will also continue to fight against oblivion through my art and am closing today with the same words, that were written once on the Berlin Wall in wise foresight: „Eventually, every wall will fall. . . „

Klaus Merkel / early 1980s / late 1980s

From September 3, 2011 through March 24, 2012, the Kienzle Art Foundation will present its Show 4:
Klaus Merkel / early 1980s / late 1980s. This exhibition will once again focus on the programmatic orientation and specific content that are Jochen Kienzle’s primary interests. They center on discursive queries concerning the creation of pictures. 

In retrospect, looking at the 1980s facilitates a clarification and a more concise insight into how the protagonists of the day conceived their oeuvre. At the time, Klaus Merkel suggested a definition of painting that soon turned out to be a “special path” with a valid statement. The latter formed the basis for the increasingly differentiated strategies of his work.

In the early 1980s, Merkel’s paintings were primarily dominated by a grey “Southern German Palette” whose motives were based entirely on a sparse painting process with linear excerpts. Cluster-like arrangements formed ensembles filling entire walls. Picture and object were dealt with on one plane. In his 1984 essay Markus Brüderlin referred to Merkel’s current painting as a tool kit wherein the picture surface is comparable to a topographically thick ocean underscoring the preliminary character of the works. He pointed out that the formats took as their point of reference their handiness vis-à-vis a physical counterpart, especially in such instances where his head-high stele pictures insinuated directly anthropomorphic proportions and scales.

In the mid-80s the artist, by now in his mid-thirties, changed the mode of conceiving his oeuvre into a system-building, discursive type of painting. Its main characteristics were serial motif-types, standardized, ‘loud’ colors, and an unusual selection of formats. A type of painting that—while insisting on its sensuality—was also intent on demonstrating the dismantling of painting’s canon of values. Klaus Merkel confirmed the end of his early work phase by exhibiting his ensembles in extreme ways. He then went on to emphasize the complex interdependencies between the individual panel and the conditions of its presentation. Perpetuating the latter as painting motifs, they define his oeuvre to this day.

Both phases of these heterogeneous painting concepts will be assembled in the upcoming exhibition

This is the first time that the Kienzle Art Foundation will present, in tandem with the artist, a selection of works as conglomerate and condensate drawn from the foundation’s holdings as well as other public and private loans.

Klaus Merkel (born in 1953 in Heidelberg) studied painting with Peter Dreher in Freiburg in the 1970s.
Completely unimpressed by the revival of narrative tendencies in the 1980s, he unswervingly stuck to his nonrepresentational painting. Numerous public and private collections in Germany and abroad own works by Klaus Merkel.

Die Kienzle Art Foundation präsentiert vom 3. September 2011 bis 24. März 2012 ihre vierte Ausstellung:
Klaus Merkel / frühe 80er / späte 80er. Auch diese entspricht in der programmatischen Ausrichtung den spezifischen inhaltlichen Interessen von Jochen Kienzle, in deren Mittelpunkt die diskursiven Fragen der Bilderstellung stehen.

Rückblickend erlaubt die Sicht auf die 80er Jahre eine Klärung und genauere Einsicht in die Werkentwürfe der damaligen ProtagonistInnen. Klaus Merkel hatte in jener Zeit einen Malereibegriff vorgeschlagen, der sich bald als „Sonderweg“ mit gültiger Aussage erweist, die den in seinem Werk sich immer weiter ausdifferenzierenden Strategien Grundlage gab.

In den frühen 80er Jahren ist Merkels Malerei vor allem durch eine graue, „süddeutsche Palette“ bestimmt, deren Motive sich ganz aus einem kargen Malprozeß, einer linearen Ausschnitthaftigkeit, begründen. Clusterartige Anordnungen bilden wandfüllende Ensembles. Bild und Objekt werden auf einer Ebene verhandelt. Markus Brüderlin spricht 1984 in seinem Essay von Merkels damaliger Malerei als einem Baukasten in dem die Bildoberfläche einem topografisch verdickten Ozean gleicht, der das Vorläufige der Werke unterstützt und die Formate sich an der Handlichkeit eines physischen Gegenübers orientieren, vor allem dort, wo in den mannshohen Stelenbildern direkt anthropomorphe Proportionen und Maßstäbe anklingen.

Der Werkentwurf des Mittdreißigers bricht Mitte der 80er Jahre um in eine systembildende, diskursive Malerei, die vor allem über serielle Motiv-Typen, standardisierte, laute Farbigkeiten und eine außergewöhnliche Formatwahl auffällt. Malerei, die trotz Beharren auf ihrer Sinnlichkeit den Abbau des Wertekanons von Malerei mitmalt.

Demonstriert durch extreme Hängungen seiner Ensembles beendet Klaus Merkel sein Frühwerk und leitet über in die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen dem einzelnen Tafelbild und seinen Präsentationsbedingungen, die als Malmotive weiter geführt werden und sein Werk bis heute bestimmen. Beide Phasen dieser heterogenen Malereientwürfe werden kontrapunktisch in der Ausstellung
Klaus Merkel / frühe 80er / späte 80er versammelt.

Die Kienzle Art Foundation präsentiert zum ersten Mal eine mit dem Künstler entwickelte Werkzusammenführung als Konglomerat und Kondensat des eigenen Sammlungsbestandes mit wichtigen öffentlichen und privaten Leihgaben.

Klaus Merkel (*1953, Heidelberg) studierte in den siebziger Jahren bei Peter Dreher in Freiburg Malerei. Völlig unbeirrt von der Wiederbelebung des Narrativen in den achtziger Jahren hielt er an einer ungegenständlichen Malerei fest. Merkel ist in verschiedenen öffentlichen und privaten deutschen und internationalen Sammlungen vertreten.
